Burnley bring Anel Ahmedhodžić back to the Championship from Feyenoord

Burnley have signed Bosnia & Herzegovina centre-back Anel Ahmedhodžić from Feyenoord on a four-year contract, both clubs confirmed on Thursday. The fee is undisclosed; it has been reported at around £7m. Sky Sports had reported an accepted bid a day before the announcement.

The 27-year-old is a straight replacement in a defence that lost its cornerstone this summer, with Maxime Estève sold to RB Leipzig for a reported £21.25m. Relegated from the Premier League in May, Burnley have banked significant fees in this window — Loum Tchaouna also joined newly promoted Coventry City for a reported £20m — and are reinvesting in players who already know the second tier.

Ahmedhodžić qualifies on that count. He was central to Sheffield United's promotion from the Championship in 2023 and played top-flight and second-tier football at Bramall Lane before a single season in the Eredivisie with Feyenoord.

"I'm really happy to be here," he told the club's website. "I've played at Turf Moor against Burnley before and it's always been a really good atmosphere, I'm excited to call it home. I know the Championship from my time in the league and I'm looking forward to using my experience to help the team. I can't wait to get started."

Three of last season's Premier League clubs — Burnley, West Ham and Wolves — are now stocking up for the same promotion race, and the spending among them is unlike anything the division has seen.
