Aaron Wan-Bissaka leaves West Ham for Aston Villa on loan with a conditional obligation

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has left West Ham for Aston Villa on a season-long loan, with an obligation to make the move permanent next summer "should certain conditions be met" — the club's own wording. The deal was announced by both clubs on Friday.

The DR Congo international right-back is the latest senior player to leave London Stadium since relegation, following the sales of Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham and Crysencio Summerville to Al Hilal. Yahoo reported that West Ham initially rejected a straight loan, having valued the defender at around £25m, before the two clubs compromised on the conditional obligation.

The logic runs both ways. Villa add a Champions League-eligible, Premier League-proven defender without an up-front fee. West Ham move one of their biggest earners off a Championship wage bill while preserving a route to a fee — the kind of structure relegated clubs increasingly prefer to a cut-price sale.

It sharpens the picture of West Ham's window: three of the club's most saleable assets have gone out, while record signing Arne Engels and Golden Boot winner Joël Piroe have come in. The squad is now unmistakably built for one purpose — an immediate return to the Premier League — and after the opening-day defeat to Charlton, the scrutiny on that project has already begun.
