Southampton take Manchester City striker Divin Mubama on loan for the promotion push

Southampton have signed striker Divin Mubama on a season-long loan from Manchester City, adding a 21-year-old forward to their promotion push for a second season in the Championship.

It is Mubama's second consecutive loan in the division. He spent last season at Stoke City, scoring five goals in 26 appearances in a campaign interrupted by an ankle injury — numbers that undersell a player City considered worth developing after taking him from West Ham's academy.

"An extremely talented striker," is how Southampton's group sporting director Johannes Spors described him, adding that the club "acted quickly to bring him here, not just because of his incredible goal scoring ability, but because of his work ethic and hunger to help the team."

The fixture computer offered an immediate subplot, lining Mubama up to face his former loan club Stoke at St Mary's in his first weekend as a Saints player.

Southampton missed the play-offs in their first season back at this level and have recruited forwards aggressively this summer — Lewis Dobbin arrived from Aston Villa for a reported £8.9m and goalkeeper Daniel Peretz from Bayern Munich for a reported £6.9m. A proven route back to the Premier League demands goals; Mubama is the latest bet on where they come from.
