West Ham break the Championship transfer record to sign Arne Engels from Celtic

West Ham United have signed Belgium midfielder Arne Engels from Celtic on a five-year contract with the option of a further year — and in doing so have broken the record for a fee paid by an English second-tier club. The fee is officially undisclosed, but it is widely reported at £22m, eclipsing the £17.5m Ipswich Town paid for Sindre Walle Egeli in 2025. Some reports put the package higher still once add-ons are counted.

The 22-year-old arrives as the centrepiece of a rebuild aimed at taking the relegated Hammers straight back to the Premier League under Nuno Espírito Santo. Engels joined Celtic from Augsburg in August 2024, made 46 appearances last season with seven goals and eight assists, and won back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles. He has four senior caps for Belgium and can also cover right-back and the right wing.

"Arne is a player we have been tracking for some time as a key target," said West Ham recruitment director Nils Koppen in the club's announcement. "He has the right traits, both as a player and as a character, to fit into what we are trying to build."

Engels was equally direct about why he dropped a division: "It's a really nice project to come into. To try to go back to the Premier League. That's the big goal." He made his debut in Saturday's home opener against Charlton Athletic.

The deal is the headline act of an extraordinary two-way window in east London. West Ham have raised more than £150m in sales this summer — Mateus Fernandes joining Tottenham for a club-record £85m and Crysencio Summerville moving to Al Hilal for up to £60m — and are reinvesting it in a squad built for an immediate promotion push. No Championship club has ever spent like it; the rest of the division has been warned.
